BETHLEHEM, PA. - Among tales of hope, generosity and togetherness, the COVID-19 pandemic has additionally given rise to an unbelievable feat of ingenuity - the invention of the "Bug Zapper" to sterilize masks. As hospitals and other entrance-line organizations jumped to secure massive portions of life-saving supplies and private protecting equipment (PPE), there has also been the necessity to establish faster, extra efficient methods to scrub and sterilize those gadgets, significantly the coveted N95 masks. St. Luke’s University Health Network anesthesiologist, Christopher Roscher, MD, anticipated the necessity and an idea started to form. "It grew to become clear that PPE supplies would grow to be limited as the virus progressed," he says. It’s a behind-the-scenes perform that is an important a part of the health care system. For Dr. Roscher, a light went on - literally and figuratively. "I had been doing private research about discovering ways to decontaminate masks for reuse, and [http://adamnas2.synology.me/site002/bbs/board.php?bo_table=free&wr_id=3043074 Zap Zone] peer-reviewed literature instructed that, in a pandemic, UV-C gentle could be a suitable strategy to sterilize masks," he says. UV-C is a specific range of UV, or ultra-violet, light and has been proven to deactivate viruses and different pathogens by causing modifications of their DNA. Through a mutual contact, Dr. Roscher obtained in contact with Nelson Tansu, PhD, Lehigh University’s Director and Endowed Chair of its Center for Photonics and Nanoelectronics (CPN). "What St. Luke’s was in search of was a high-throughput sterilization system," mentioned Dr. Tansu. The 2 organizations joined forces by way of a collection of Zoom conferences and hundreds of emails, to design, fabricate, install and check the system - all inside a matter of two weeks - and all whereas maintaining social distancing protocols.

The end end result: a solution to successfully and efficiently sterilize 200 masks every eight minutes! The "Bug Zapper" in action. "Our present items were not designed for big-scale use. They might only sterilize about 30 masks at a time," said Eric Tesoriero, DO, anesthesiologist for St. Luke’s and a collaborator on the mission. The unit, engineered by Lehigh students and employees and assembled at St. Luke’s by biomedical engineer Jay Johnson, has been affectionally named the "Bug Zapper" not only attributable to its appearance, however attributable to its COVID-killing properties. "It is incredible that this project moved at such a fast pace," remarks Dr. Tansu. The crew ranged from PhDs to MDs and even included an unexpected contributor - Axel Tansu, Dr. Tansu’s adolescent son. In fact, it was Axel’s contribution that allowed the unit to have such a excessive-throughput rate. "Our unique design was cylindrical in shape, to make sure even exposure of the light on all surfaces," explains Dr. Tansu.

"Axel got here to me and stated, ‘Dad, [http://www.mecosys.com/bbs/board.php?bo_table=project_02&wr_id=6105128 Zap Zone] what about an octagon? ’ And [http://epochio.com/index.php/Bug_Zapper_Review Zap Zone] certain sufficient, he was proper. Until then, the Bug Zapper will be arduous at work, helping to guard the frontline staff at St. Luke’s and beyond. This, like so many different stories, affords a ray of hope throughout the pandemic - showcasing that the human thoughts and spirit can overcome anything - especially when working together for a fantastic trigger. Afterall, as the well-known philosopher Plato understood hundreds of years ago, necessity is the mom of invention. Founded in 1872, St. Luke's University Health Network (SLUHN) is a completely built-in, regional, non-profit network of more than 15,000 employees offering services at eleven hospitals and 300 outpatient sites. With annual net revenue larger than $2 billion, the Network’s service area consists of eleven counties: Lehigh, [https://americanspeedways.net/index.php/User:LizzieD55676414 Zap Zone] Northampton, Berks, Bucks, Carbon, Montgomery, Monroe, Schuylkill and Luzerne counties in Pennsylvania and Warren and Hunterdon counties in New Jersey.
